Thread: proper prop

    proper prop

First of all, I'm glad this site is up and running once again.

I have a question regarding prop pitch for the 150 on my 220EX. I had the boat out last week in optimal conditions. At WOT it maxed out out at 4800 rpms and we were doing about 31 mph. The boat was loaded with three guys and a half tank of gas. Is this performance on par with what I should expect? Or might there be some improvement by changing the prop?

Por Fin, I have tested many props on my 2007 220EX with the Yamaha 150. I purchased my prop with Valley Propellor in Ventura Ca. According to the Yamaha Rep. this motors Rev Limitor is at 6200RPM and the engines sweet spot is at 5800RPM. I had the same 4800RPM and found when you get into larger swells the engine would lug down and the swells would pass you up until the next swell would sling shot you into the backside. Not such a great feeling. I will go home tonight and verify the brand, pitch,& diameter and send you another reply. I am now able to run the engine up to the Rev Limitor if necesssay and motor through larger waters. My boat is always loaded with fishing & dive gear. Top speed in approx 26 mph in optimal cond. at 5800RPM. Maybe 3mpg. which is the most out of all 5 props tested.

What Size and Pitch of prop are you using right now? With your Numbers I can get you a prop number that should work well for your ypical load. Props are always tough because people load boats so differently. from the factory they com with a prop that reaches peak RPM with a light load. Many of the California guys need to buy a different prop and use their current prop as a Spare. I would recommend buying a stainless prop for your primary as well.

If you have a Bait Tank, Lots of fuel and lots of guys, you will definitely want to change props. It will improve fuel economy and longevity of the engine. The guys in the northwest are typically set up right with the factory prop, but they are not running with the load that a typical California Angler is.

    I hope this helps.

Por Fin, The prop that works for me and has good response throughout is a stainless Solas 15 5/8x11. I do carry a load at all times. Hope this helps with your prop selection.

The only numbers I can find on the prop are 17M. Does that help?

I do have a bait tank and am frequently pretty well loaded down.

That is the same prop my boat came with. It was weak out of the hole and unresponsive at higher RPM. I like this Solas prop. From what I am hearing from others is that my top speed may be less, but it is nice to have the RPM when necessary.

Chris, thanks for the information. I may give that prop a try.

I am hoping to hear back from Defiance with a prop suggestion that might get me to the right rpms and not sacrafice so much in speed, if at all possible.

Howdeee, I have a 17M also and it isn't working like I think it should, I'm also looking for a better prop. I believe that I would like to be propped for a heavier load. I can always cut back on the throttle. I'm not ever going to get much lighter than I am.. thanks for the info I have gotten from this thread.
