Launched and picked up live bait in Richmond at 0615 hours with my visiting brother-in-law and nephew. My plan was to run up to Muir for some halibut. As we approached Muir I saw that many others had the same plan, so I veered left and headed to the North Bar... we had it all to ourselves.
We dropped lines in and in less than a minute Tristin (nephew) has a fish on -he landed his first ever halibut.
On the next drift Tristin lands another nice butt and I farmed one. Then Bud (bro-in-law) boats one.
After that, I landed a butt and then Tristin's rod goes off and line was peeling. Tristin patiently worked that fish to the leader and we got a glimpse of a beautiful white sea bass. The fish took off again and came unbuttoned.
On what we planned to be our last drift, Tristin hauled in another butt. Shortly after, my rod goes off and it feels like a run away locomotive. The fish ran from one side to the other and then took me to the bow of the boat where I settled in for a 20-minute battle. As the fish reached exhaustion I was able to get it to the surface. I handed the rod off to Tristin, then gaffed and boated a 45 lb white sea bass... my first!
We ended the day with five halis and a WSB. It was great fun sharing today's experiences with my East Coast family.
